Söderfors Herrgård is situated in north-western Uppland on a bank of the river Dal (Dalälven in Swedish). The manor house, which was built in the 1690´s, is one of the oldest buildings in the district. Sundbyholm Castle was built by the Admiral of the Navy Karl Karlsson Gyllenhielm, King Karl the Ninth’ son and King Gustav Vasa’s grandson. The Admiral was greatly respected for his modern and forward looking ideas at the time – e.g. in 1629 he established the first public elementary school nearby the castle, 200 years prior to the Swedish public school reform.
