Sundbyholm Castle from the 1640’s is situated at the southern shore of Lake Mälaren. The castle and its surroundings are as beautiful in real life as in the many paintings and drawings made throughout the centuries. Prince Eugen’s ‘The Old Castle’ is one of the most famous and reproduced estate paintings in Sweden. Sundbyholm Castle was built by the Admiral of the Navy Karl Karlsson Gyllenhielm, King Karl the Ninth’ son and King Gustav Vasa’s grandson. The Admiral was greatly respected for his modern and forward looking ideas at the time – e.g. in 1629 he established the first public elementary school nearby the castle, 200 years prior to the Swedish public school reform.
Sundbyholm Castle enlightens old traditions and cultures for the demanding customer. Visiting entourages enters the castle on a red carpet at the main castle entrance or at the steamboat pier. Banquets, weddings and ceremonial events are saluted and guests welcomed by three canon shots – a traditional ceremony since.

Special features:

The longest natural sand beach of Lake Mälaren, Prize-rewarded pleasure-boat harbor, first-class à la carte restaurant, wedding chapel in the cellar of the castle, the northernmost beech forest, a couple of genuine old buildings from past centuries that have been completely renovated and redecorated to or beyond their former beauty.

Activities:

The surroundings of Sundbyholm Castle offer a wide range of outdoor activities, including some exciting 1000-year old viking remains, Europe’s northernmost beech forest, the finest pleasure-boat harbor on Lake Mälaren as well as the Lake´s longest natural sand beach. For those seeking a more structured program of activities we recommend golf on the Sundbyholm Golf Course (18 holes within 3 km), horse-back riding or perhaps a picnic on an electrically-powered log raft.

Kitchen description:

The exquisite Castle Restaurant serves first class à la carte dishes made from local products carefully selected and prepared by the Castle’s Chef. Examples of popular entrees are Mushroom filled Quail served with rosemary marinated Scorzonera, and Fillet of Reindeer with chanterelle filled potato dumplings. The Castle’s exclusive wine cellar holds an impressive selection of wine, always guaranteeing a perfect match with the meal. Breakfasts, luncheons and dinners are all served in the Castle.

Worth seeing:

The Castle, the Manor, The Coachman´s Old Quarters, The Estate Manager´s Residence, the School Museum, the 1000 year old viking rune stone, the sand beach, the pleasure-boat harbor, the beech forests, the Zoo in the nearby town of Eskilstuna (featuring white tigers and more), local glass blowing and design, the archipelago of Lake Mälaren etc.
