Visit Vadstena Castle in Sweden

Vadstena Castle is Sweden’s best-preserved Renaissance castle. The decision to build a fortress on the shores of Lake Vättern in Vadstena was made in 1544 with the aim of defending Sweden against enemies in the south. When the fortress had been completed for five years, Gustav Vasa decided to rebuild the complex into a residence for his youngest son Magnus. Since then, the castle has become a fixture in the small town and attracts visitors from all corners of the world.

The monastery church and Bjälbo Palace

Vadstena is well known for the monastery that Saint Birgitta, the patron saint of Europe, built. Even today, the Birgitta sisters still live in the area. The monastery church stands as majestic as ever and around the town there are remains from the monastery era. Visit the monks’ garden where thousands of cloister lilies bloom every spring. Discover the ruins located by the church, here you have a beautiful view of the shores of Lake Vättern.

Adjacent to the Monastery Church stands a red brick building with a unique history. Originally constructed as a palace for the Bjälbo dynasty, it was later donated to Saint Bridget to establish the monastery. Today, this building houses a museum featuring Saint Bridget’s casket and various artifacts from the monastic period.

Set out on the road and follow the mountainside with its endless views of the rolling Vättern. Make a stop at Stocklycke and then follow the path up to Hjässan, Omberg’s highest point. There, surrounded by the tranquility of nature, you can enjoy a well-deserved coffee break with a breathtaking panoramic view of the Östgötaslätten plain, Hästholmen and the sparkling Vättern.
