DAY 1 & 2 – Stockholm – The Capital of Scandinavia
Discover Stockholm’s rich cultural heritage by visiting the city’s many museums and attractions. One of the most popular excursion destinations is the open-air museum Skansen, where you can experience Swedish history and culture by walking among historic buildings and meeting animals from the Swedish countryside.
The Vasa Museum is also one of the city’s main attractions, where you can admire the magnificent 17th-century ship Vasa and learn about its dramatic fate. For those interested in natural history, the Natural History Museum is a must-visit, with an impressive collection of Swedish and international plants, animals and minerals.
Stay at: Fredriksborgs Hotel
Driving distance from the airport: 20-60 min
Day 3 & 4 – Dalarna – recommended by the New York Times!
Drive 2-3 hours northwest to Dalarna, which The New York Times recommends as one of the “best places to see in 2012”. As you know, this landscape is also home to our great Swedish painters: Carl Larsson and Anders Zorn. Their homes are now open to the public and serve as museums and galleries for the artist’s work.
The whole area around Lake Siljan is full of craft shops and art galleries, and this is the place to be during national holidays such as Midsummer and Christmas, for that genuinely traditional celebration. The stunningly beautiful nature of this region comes as an added bonus!
Stay at: Tällbergsgårdens Hotel or Fryksås Hotel & Gestgifveri.
Driving distance from previous night’s hotel: 2-3.5 hours
DAY 5-6 – Tradition, heritage and culture
In Hälsingland, a few hours’ drive east across Sweden, you will find the centuries-old, proud farmhouses “Hälsingegårdarna”. Many of them are open to the public and serve as museums of the region’s fascinating history and culture. Also, don’t miss visiting as many country churches as you can and manage in this fantastically beautiful landscape.
Stay at: Hotel Järvsöbaden
Driving distance from the previous night’s hotel: 4 hours
DAY 7 & 8 – Walloon mills
Welcome to beautiful Roslagen! Walloon mills is a collective name for a number of mills in northern Uppland, created in the 17th century when the financier Louis De Geer imported Belgian labor, Walloons from Wallonia in Belgium. The Upland Walloon mills are fantastic places that are well worth a visit. To experience the beautiful natural area of Roslagen, we recommend a drive along the coast and, of course, a visit to the historic city of Uppsala.
Stay at: Gimo Manor
Driving distance from the previous night’s hotel: 1-2 hours
