An autumn break does not have to mean spending an entire week trying to come up with something new to do every day.
Sometimes, the best option is simply to pack a bag, check into a hotel and let someone else take care of the plans. And during autumn, some hotels in Sweden make the season particularly special, with ghost walks after dark, steaming outdoor baths in the chilly air, murder mysteries over dinner and historic castles where the corridors seem to creak just a little louder than usual.
We have selected six hotels for anyone looking to fill their autumn break with Halloween, swimming, mystery and cosy moments. Whether you are travelling with young children, teenagers or someone who simply loves a good ghost story, these stays all offer something memorable.
Here is what makes each hotel special – and which one might suit you best this autumn.
Två Skyttlar – an autumn break with ghost walks, outdoor adventures and bathing

If the children get to choose, Två Skyttlar may well become the highlight of the autumn break.
Set beside Lake Öresjön outside Örby, the hotel offers a ready-made family adventure with a forest expedition, ghost walk and warm outdoor bathing by the lake.
The hotel prepares a backpack with pancake batter, dough for traditional Swedish stick bread and something sweet for fika. Children receive their own little explorer kit, and along the 1.5-kilometre trail there is spooky bingo to complete before gathering around the fire to cook pancakes and bread outdoors.

When darkness falls, it is time for a suitably spooky ghost walk designed for both younger and older guests.
Afterwards, the whole family can warm up at Sjölyckan, with lakeside saunas and hot tubs overlooking the water. The package also includes dinner, accommodation in a family room and breakfast the following morning.
Choose Två Skyttlar if: the children want ghost stories and a forest adventure, while the adults would quite happily end the day soaking in a warm bath beside the lake.

Stufvenäs Gästgifveri – when Halloween becomes a murder mystery dinner

At Stufvenäs Gästgifveri in Småland, Halloween involves considerably more than a pumpkin by the entrance.
At the end of October, the hotel hosts Mord på Gästgifveriet – a murder mystery experience where professional actors bring the drama directly into the dining room.
The evening begins with fika and continues with a welcome drink, a four-course dinner and, as the hotel itself puts it, various horrors along the way.

At some point during the evening, a murder takes place. You can choose whether to mingle with the characters and try to solve the mystery yourself or simply sit back and watch the story unfold around the dinner table.
Accommodation and breakfast are included too.
For families, Stufvenäs also hosts its own autumn break experience from 26–29 October, when both adults and children are welcome in the spa during the morning. It is a separate offer, but it means the hotel manages to combine relaxed family time during the school holidays with something considerably darker as Halloween approaches.
Choose Stufvenäs if: your ideal Halloween involves a four-course dinner with a murder mystery unfolding around the table.

Näsby Slott – a cosy autumn break near Stockholm

Not every autumn break needs to be filled with ghosts.
Sometimes, a castle, good food and a few unhurried days together are more than enough.
At Näsby Slott in Täby, you can play billiards and board games, take a walk through the castle grounds or bring pizza down into the historic cellar vaults.

In the basement of Kadettmässen, there is also a wellness area with a hot tub, sauna and relaxation spaces, available to guests aged 12 and over.
The castle is located only around 15 minutes from Stockholm, making it easy to combine your hotel stay with a day exploring the Swedish capital.

Vadstena Klosterhotel – an autumn spa break in a medieval monastery setting

A spa break with children is not always an obvious combination.
During the Swedish school holidays, however, Vadstena Klosterhotel welcomes families with children aged 12 and over to its Klosterspa.
Here, you can swim in the saltwater pool, alternate between warm and cold springs and try everything from herbal saunas and steam rooms to forest-inspired relaxation and meditation rooms.
And the surroundings are just as special as the spa itself.

The hotel is located in Vadstena’s historic monastery district, with parts of the property housed in buildings dating back to the 13th and 14th centuries.
The school’s holiday spa package includes three hours in the spa, a two-course dinner served in the monks’ former dormitory, an overnight stay and breakfast.
With stone vaults, candlelight and several centuries of history around you, the setting hardly needs any invented ghosts to feel mysterious after dark.
Choose Vadstena Klosterhotel if: you are travelling with children aged 12 or over and want to combine an autumn spa break with a night in a genuinely medieval setting.

Toftaholm Herrgård – would you dare to sleep near room 324?

At Toftaholm Herrgård beside Lake Vidöstern, it becomes a little harder to blame every strange noise on old wooden floors.
The manor is home to one of Sweden’s best-known hotel ghost stories.
According to legend, a young man named Matts fell in love with the daughter of a noble family but lost her to another man.
The story ended tragically, and ever since, Matts is said to have remained at the manor – particularly around room 324.

Over the years, guests have reported unexplained noises, sudden drops in temperature and doors that seem to move by themselves. The hotel’s owners have also told Swedish Radio that Matts was a real person who took his own life at the manor.
Whether or not you believe the story is entirely up to you.
The hotel’s manor package includes a four-course dining experience, overnight accommodation and breakfast. If you are brave enough to actually stay in the famous room, you will need to contact the hotel directly and ask whether room 324 is available.
Choose Toftaholm if: you want to combine an autumn weekend at a Swedish country manor with one of the country’s most talked-about hotel ghost stories.

Torreby Slott – where even the dogs are said to hesitate at the door

A 19th-century castle does not need much help to feel mysterious.
At Torreby Slott in Bohuslän, however, there are also stories of things that are rather more difficult to explain.
In a 2024 interview, the hotel’s then-director described objects falling from shelves, candles flickering despite there being no draught and a vase suddenly cracking for no obvious reason.

There are also stories of animals refusing to enter parts of the castle – including a dog that reportedly began barking as though it could see someone that the people in the room could not.
Today, you can book an overnight stay at the castle and add a three-course castle dinner on Fridays and Saturdays.
After that, all that remains is to find out whether your night will be quite as peaceful as your dinner.
Choose Torreby Slott if: you want to spend the night in a castle in Bohuslän where old ghost stories and unexplained events are still part of the atmosphere.
